From Doubt to Impact - My SEL journey

When I first learnt about the importance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), I honestly wasn’t convinced. It felt like one more idea that might sound good in theory but wouldn’t have a real impact in the classroom. But over time, with consistent effort and intentional practice, I began to see how even the smallest shifts in our daily routines could make a profound difference.

It started with simple morning circles — a space where students could arrive as they were, share how they felt, and ease into the day with a sense of belonging. Slowly, I worked on creating a warm, safe, and welcoming environment for every learner. I became more mindful of how I spoke to children, how I responded to their needs, and how I encouraged them to express themselves. I also began having more one-on-one conversations, taking the time to understand what each child was going through. These moments built trust, strengthened rapport, and reminded students that their feelings mattered.

Empathy has been central to this journey. It helps bridge the gap between SEL and inclusive classrooms by ensuring every child feels understood, valued, supported, and emotionally seen within the learning community.

We explored themes like compassion, consciousness, kindness, and self-awareness through discussions and simple activities. These conversations helped all of us — the children and me — pause, reflect, and understand our actions and behaviour more deeply. Over time, we collectively created a non-judgemental space where no one hesitated to speak openly about their emotions.

One conscious practice I follow is acknowledging when I make mistakes or when I don’t know something. I want my students to see that errors are not failures but opportunities to learn and grow. Through SEL, my classroom transformed into a place where connection came before content, and where emotional safety became the foundation for meaningful learning. And that has made all the difference.
